Liam McArthur MSP has pledged to take part in the 2025 Doddie Aid campaign, run by the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to raise funds for research into Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

The Doddie Foundation was set up in 2017 by the late former Scotland rugby player Doddie Weir, after he was diagnosed with MND. Every year in January, the foundation holds the Doddie Aid campaign, where participants pledge £20 to undertake their own personal exercise challenge over five weeks, be it running, walking, cycling, dancing, swimming.

Since 2017, the Foundation has committed over £18 million in research into effective treatments and a cure for MND, but this remains a challenging disease with few treatments and no cure. All donations from the Doddie Aid campaign will be put towards these efforts.

Liam McArthur joined Dougie Vipond and other supporters of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation at the Scottish Parliament to learn about the research landscape for MND and to sign up to take part in the campaign, which this year has the theme “Weir in this together”. For the first time, Doddie Aid participants will be split into the four nations of Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales and will compete to see which nation can log the most miles over the five weeks of the campaign.

Liam McArthur said:

The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation does invaluable work in raising awareness and fundraising to help support people with MND.

“The Doddie Aid Campaign is a fantastic way to get involved and support this worthwhile cause and has the added benefit of promoting exercise within the community.

“It’s been a pleasure taking part over recent years, and provided a good excuse for getting out with the dog on cold January mornings. I certainly know that Gerry the Springer has benefited and is looking forward to being part of the 2025 campaign.

“DoddieAid has always enjoyed strong support in Orkney and I’m sure that will be the case again this year. I’m also quietly confident that #TeamScotland will have the edge over the other home nations as we all look to raise funds to support the incredible work done by the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.”
