McArthur reacts to Kirkwall Visitor Centre closure plans
Reacting to the news that VisitScotland plan to close the tourist ‘iCentre’ in Kirkwall by 2026 as part of a national reorganisation, Orkney’s MSP Liam McArthur said:
“In a community as reliant on tourism as Orkney, this news will come as a shock to most people and a real concern to those involved in the sector itself.
“Over the years, the iCentre in Kirkwall has proved to be a popular and well-used ‘hub’ for tourists as well as locals. Proposing to close it, therefore, raises serious questions that will require to be answered.
“Indeed, coming hot on the heels of the decision of Destination Orkney’s board to resign, the proposed closure adds further uncertainty to a tourism sector already facing considerable challenges.
“With closure not due to take place until 2026, there is at least an opportunity for VisitScotland and partners within the sector to consider the implications and explore all possible options. I am determined to play my part in those discussions to ensure no decisions are taken that undermine a sector that plays such an important role in our local economy.”
