McArthur encourages constituents to redeem energy rebate vouchers
Orkney's MSP, Liam McArthur, is encouraging households in Orkney with prepayment meters to ensure they have redeemed their energy rebate vouchers ahead of their 90-day expiry by 9 April 2023.
Mr McArthur's appeal follows warnings from Advice Direct Scotland that around 1 in 5 households with prepayment gas and electricity meters have not redeemed their energy rebate vouchers issued last month by PayPoint. Vouchers issued in November have now expired.
While most households have received a £400 discount on their electricity bills split across six instalments or had money added directly to their bank accounts, those on traditional prepayment meters need to have a voucher to redeem the discount.
Advice Direct Scotland have advised that eligible households to check unopened mail or contact their energy suppliers directly. ADS operate a helpline for constituents struggling to contact energy suppliers or resolve issues on 080 196 8660 Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
Orkney's MSP recently challenged SSE/OVO about their PayPoint vouchers which were initially only redeemable in Kirkwall meaning those in the isles faced having to travel to the mainland to redeem vouchers. Mr McArthur received an assurance that cheques can be issued instead upon request, which THAW Orkney, Citizens Advice Bureau or indeed Mr McArthur’s constituency office are happy to assist with.
Commenting, Mr McArthur said:
"With energy prices and inflation persistency high, it's vital that everyone is able to access the financial support available to them. This is especially important for those on prepayment meters who are often some of the most vulnerable.
"I urge all households in Orkney with prepayment meters to ensure they have redeemed their energy rebate vouchers issued last month before they expire in April. It's concerning to hear that so many households missed out on redeeming vouchers issued in November and we must avoid any repeat of that situation this time round.
"I would also encourage those with prepayment meters in the isles unable to redeem their vouchers to contact their energy suppliers for a cheque instead. If you have any difficulties contacting your suppliers or resolving any energy issues, please get in touch with my office."
