McArthur calls for localised smart meter roll out in Orkney
Orkney MSP Liam McArthur today urged the First Minister to consider supporting a more localised approach to smart meter installation in island communities such as Orkney.
A Panorama Investigation this week highlighted a ‘smart meter divide’ within the UK between North and South, with customers in Scotland experiencing increased operational issues due to the method of data collection and communications network used.
During First Minister’s Questions, Mr McArthur pointed out that discrepancies already exist in Scotland in terms of the access to smart meters. In Orkney, the roll out rate sits at around 20%, compared to the national average of 65%.
As well as steps to address the communications issues highlighted in the Panorama investigation, Mr McArthur called for the First Minister to lend his support to a regional approach to installation, delivered through locally recruited installers. This would replace the current supplier-led approach where installers work for a number of suppliers, and are mobilised from the Scottish mainland to install smart meters in Orkney and other island communities.
Speaking after, Mr McArthur said:
“Panorama has shone a light on the current ‘smart meter divide’ between England and Scotland. However, a divide exists within Scotland as well, with the roll out rate for smart meters in Orkney sitting at 20%, compared to a national average of 65%.
“While there is certainly a need to address the communications issues that prevent smart meters operating as effectively in other parts of the UK, we also need a tailored approach to installation in Orkney. By taking a regional approach, where locally recruited installers lead on the roll out, the rate of installations could be increased. This would also have the added benefit of engineers being available to help customers with any issues that may arise. Given the disproportionately high number of RTS customers in Orkney, that additional support is likely to be essential.
“I know that discussions are already underway locally about implementing such an approach and talks have been held with the regulator, Ofgem. However, I welcome the First Minister’s confirmation that the Scottish Government will support these efforts and look forward to working with the relevant Minister, Alasdair Allan in making appropriate representations.”
